RETURNING THIS FALL...

BREAKAWAY HOCKEY

A non-competitive learn to skate and beginner hockey program for boys and girls who have never played organized hockey.

Kent Minor Hockey Association is excited and proud to be continuing our Breakaway Hockey program for the upcoming season.

KMHA's Breakaway Hockey program is designed to introduce kids and their families to the sport of hockey in a fun and friendly environment. It's an opportunity for kids who have never registered for minor hockey to try hockey for a season without the commitment of KMHA's full hockey program.

The focus for the Breakaway Hockey on ice sessions is to have fun and teach kids basic skating and fundamental hockey skills. It's a non-competitive environment in which boys and girls are encouraged to try activities that teach skills involved in hockey.

What is Breakaway Hockey?

Breakaway Hockey includes 8 on-ice sessions in the fall beginning Monday October 17th, 2022. The on-ice sessions are once per week on the same day, at the same time to make it convenient for parents to schedule. We will continue for an additional 8 on-ice sessions in the winter beginning on Monday, January 9, 2022.

The program is open to boys and girls, ages 6-10 who have never registered for organized hockey before.

Program Cost

The cost is $99 and includes:

• 16 weeks one-hour on-ice sessions

• Expert instruction from experienced KMHA coaches and players

• Kent Cobras jersey

How do I apply?

*Cost for the RIS program is $12 (only required for new families joining KMHA)

FAQs

How much does equipment cost?

Hockey equipment can be very expensive, but it does NOT have to be. We have many suggestions for getting a full set of equipment at a very reasonable cost. For starters, check with neighbours and friends to see if they have used equipment, they want to get rid of. Most people will be happy to pass it along. Other options include used equipment stores and the used skate racks in the sports stores. Also, keep an eye on the flyers for deals. There often are sales on hockey equipment at this time of year.

Does my child need a stick?

Yes. Every child needs to have a stick for this program.

Don't worry if you don't know if they shoot Left Handed or Right Handed. That will become obvious for most kids very quickly and if the stick they have is wrong it won't make a big difference. Generally, players have their dominant hand at the top of the stick meaning a person who writes with their right hand will probably shoot left. That doesn't always apply though... kids seem to have a natural inclination to right or left. If they try both one will feel more comfortable.

What equipment do the kids need?

A full set of hockey equipment is required to participate in this program. A Breakaway Jersey will be provided. The rest of the list is:

CSA Certified Helmet with a full hockey face mask; Athletic support;Neck Guard;Hockey Gloves; Garter Belt or Jock/Jill Shorts; Skates; Hockey Pants; Shoulder Pads; Stick; Shin Pads and Elbow Pads

A hockey bag is also useful for transporting the equipment and a roll of tape can be a great asset to fix minor problems before going on the ice. We will go over everything at our welcome event or you can email us any time with questions

Will there be hockey games?

No. The focus on the program is skill development. We will be playing lots of fun games on the ice... but not true hockey games. All of our games are meant to enhance the skill development while taking the focus away from the actual skill. Kids respond well when they don't think they are learning... when they are focused on playing the game.

That said, we like to wrap up the year with a very low-key hockey game. We divide the kids into two groups, have them line up for face offs and try to create a game-like feeling for them. It's a LOT of FUN!!

Do I have to take the RIS - Parent Program again?

If you already have another child registered in Kent Minor Hockey and have taken the RIS - Parent Program you are not required to take this again. This is only required for players/parents who are new to Kent Minor Hockey.
