Minion Party
The Leafs faced the 1st place Canadiens on Saturday as this game was a nail biter til the very last minute!
Although we were short a few players, the minions came out to play. And what a game they played!
The Leafs and Canadiens took to the ice and exchanged opportunities at both ends with a fast pace to the 1st period. McGilla Gorilla made some outstanding saves to keep the Canadiens off the score sheet while the Canadiens goalie made some spectacular saves himself as the Leafs tested him multiple times. The Canadiens broke the ice with the 1st goal of the game coming at 6:45. Only 16 seconds later, Jonny Jet Pack (1 goal) fished the puck off the boards, deked out 2 defensemen and broke away to bury his 1st goal of the game to tie it up. The 1st period ended in a 1-1 tie thanks to some impressive defensive play. Rocket was cool and calm as he held the blue line well to keep the puck in the offensive zone but also helped out on the back end and chipped the puck out of his zone, helping the Leafs offensive rush. Gru and Dr. Nefario were on the Leafs bench biting their nails nervously as they watched their minions skating around the ice. Ken-Man defended well, with his best game yet as he disrupted the oppositions forecheck many times by slapping the puck away and making some sliding saves to divert the puck away from the goalie, making McGilla Gorilla's job a bit easier. Crash made some slick stick work to break away multiple times and get some quality scoring chances but the Canadiens goalie made some great saves. Crash also alternated from offense to defense, playing both positions well.
The Canadiens wasted no time in the 2nd period as it only took 18 seconds for them to regain the lead. It was 2-1 for the Canadiens. The Leafs defended well and had many scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the Canadiens net. Bailey Boo skated well and threw the puck out of her zone every time it touched her stick. The Recruit fought hard as he challenged for the puck while playing offense and defended well, stealing the puck a few times and breaking the zone while on defense. It was a 2-1 lead for the Canadiens as the 2nd period was almost done....but with only 9 seconds left, the Canadiens scored again to take a 3-1 lead going into the 3rd period. Gru was so mad that he took out his shrink ray and zapped the puck, making it so small that nobody could find it. But don't worry, they got another puck for the 3rd period.
The 3rd period started out like the 1st with the Leafs getting back on track, defending well and creating chances. But it wasn't enough to keep the Canadiens from netting their 4th goal with just under 6 minutes to play. It was 4-1 for the Canadiens and a comeback for the Leafs didn't seem promising. Gru called his minions to the bench and had a brief chat with them. He said they needed to pass the puck more and back-check better. If they did that, they would all get bananas after the game. Jonny Jet Pack and Jordy must've wanted some bananas because it only took 35 seconds for a nice bank pass off the boards from Jordy (1 assist) to send Jonny Jet Pack (2 goals) on his way to bury his 2nd goal of the game. It was now 4-2 for the Canadiens and time was running out for the Leafs. The next few minutes looked grim but Hemi came through as she has all game long. She really kicked it into gear on many back-checks to help stop the oppositions rush time and time again. With about 2 minutes to play, things got worse for the Leafs as they took a penalty for too many players on the ice. It was time for the minions to pull together and give it their all. And that's what they did! With the puck in the offensive zone and 1:48 left in the game, Ken-Man (1 assist) held the line as he fed the puck over to Jonny Jet pack (3 goals) as he dangled his way to score a short handed goal and get his hat trick. But they were not done yet, Crankin Cam (1 assist) got his gears in check, chasing down the puck in his own end and then sending a sweet pass to Jonny Jet Pack. Kicking his jet packs into high gear and spotting an opening on the right side, Jonny Jet Pack (4 goals) sent a wrist shot to beat the goalie and score another short handed goal just 23 seconds later for his 4th goal of the game. The game was now tied 4-4. With 20 seconds left in the game, the minions almost took the lead to win the game, but the Canadiens goalie made some amazing sliding saves to hang on for the tie. The horn blew and the nail biting could finally come to an end, the game ended in a well deserved 4-4 tie.
With an unbelievable comeback and an even better team effort, Gru was only worried about one thing: he didn't have any bananas to give his minions??? But the minions were happy with some cheers and high 5's as they head into a well earned Christmas break. Great job everyone!
