'Twas the Night After Christmas
‘Twas the night after Christmas and all through the rink,
Hockey bags were ripped open releasing a stink

Some jerseys were hung in the dressing room with care,
In hopes that late players soon would be there.

Most players were ready all dressed in their reds,
While visions of Stanley Cups danced in their heads.

With Coach Mark praising the Habs, and Jacob taking a nap,
I filled water bottles straight out of the tap.

When out on the ice there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the locker room to see what was the matter.

Away to the bench I flew like a flash,
Tore open the gate and stroked my mustache.

When what to my wondering eyes did appear?
But a new Zamboni driver who couldn’t quite steer.

He was wearing a helmet and didn’t look quick,
I thought for a moment he drives like a chick?

He drooled and he stuttered as he yelled player’s names,
Now Kalib, Now Hunter, Now Tyler and Christian,
On Gordon on Williem on Adam and Gryphen,

To the top of the circle, make yourself sweat,
Now skate away, skate away, get to the net

And then in a twinkle I heard in the hall,
The crashing of the sticks falling down the brick wall.

As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Off the Zamboni our hero came with a bound.

He was dressed in Wings gear from his head to his foot,
You could tell by his sad face, his Leafs were caput!

A bucket of pucks he dumped on the ice,
15 frozen biscuits to be precise.

Players were now skating, shooting and passing,
While coaches all gathered and started their laughing.

Brady got peppered defending his cage,
While Robert fired pucks with all of his rage.

Jax worked on his shot and Lydia too,
Then all of a sudden the coach whistle blew.

Shortly thereafter the players were sorted,
They went to their stations and drills were reported.

The players worked hard they deserved a reward,
But there wasn’t too much these coaches could afford.

They talked and they murmured, It couldn’t be lame,
Our hero in Red said “let’s play a game!”

The faces all smiled, I captured the image,
And then I proclaimed let’s play a quick scrimmage.

A few shifts were played it didn’t take long,
I could tell right away the decision wasn’t wrong.

Now back at the point Greg and Zach looked kind of board,
But Aiden made a pass and Cam finally scored.

The buzzer then sounded, the bench was left bare
The players were tired, they had that blank stare.

Equipment was torn off and stuffed into bags,
Jerseys and socks were treated like rags

I dragged it all out to place in my trunk,
My boy made a sound and smelled like a skunk.

I watched as the winged hero climbed up in his jeep,
He looked at his phone and started to weep

NHL standings were there in his face,
His precious Maple Leafs were out of the race

He rolled down his window as he started his car
He was getting prepared to say au revoir

Then I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
